The Great ArchaeoScience Fest

PROGRAMME

Workshops

(In alphabetical order)

aDNA from human remains
12:45 – 13:45, 18:15 – 19:15
Eveline Altena, Leiden University Medical Centre
Garden   20 people at a time

This workshop will provide insight into the basics of aDNA research, how this method can be applied, and what is required in the field. Using various case studies, Eveline will demonstrate how aDNA research on human remains contributes to archaeological research in the Netherlands. There will be ample time for questions, discussion, and, if necessary, tailored advice.

Big Data
10:30 – 11:30 AM, 5:00 – 6:00 PM,  19:30 – 20:30
Eva Kaptijn, Karsten Lambers & Wouter Verschoof-van der Vaart, Leiden University
Garden   20 people at a time

Archaeologists are increasingly struggling to effectively and efficiently examine all remote sensing data (data collected by satellites and aircraft) for archaeological structures: the big data problem. In this workshop, we will explore various strategies to tackle this problem, and you will participate in research analysing remote sensing data.

photogrammetry+
Archaeological recording with photogrammetry and 3D modelling

14:00 – 14:30, 17:15 – 17:45, 18:15 – 18:45
Roosje de Leeuwe & Jan Albert Schenk, RAAP
Educatorium   10 people at a time

In the workshop, it will be explained in 20 minutes how to create a 3D model using your phone and smart software. After a brief introduction about what it is, why you would do this, and how it is applied in modern (field) archaeology, a demonstration will follow in which an object is modelled live.
