Archeolab
Archeolab & Houtkamer ground floor
A considerable number of questions can arise from archaeological finds. Is this made of bronze or is it brass? Are we holding gold with this pin? What was this pottery glazed with? What type of wood is this made of, and how old might it be?
Anyone can visit the Archeolab to have an object they bring with them examined live for material and technical aspects by specialists from the RCE & RUG.
Archeolab
(continuing until 5:00 PM)
pXRF – Stijn Arnoldussen, Rug
This portable X-ray apparatus can measure through multiple layers using X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, thereby determining the composition of material surfaces. This includes metals, inorganic pigments, fillers, ceramics, glass, and corrosion products.
FTIR – Olivia van Rooijen & Suzan de Groot, and RCE
Works with infrared spectroscopy and analyses the structure of molecules via the absorption of infrared light, for example, of resins, adhesives, or varnishes, and plastics.
Crime Lite camera – Luc Megens, and RCE
Utilises various wavelengths of light – from ultraviolet to infrared – to make patterns visible that cannot be seen with the naked eye.
Ground floor lounge
(continuing until 5:00 PM)
Bright-field microscope – Otto Brinkkemper, and RCE
This allows you to study tiny sections of wood. The arrangement of the vessels indicates what type of wood something is made from.
Dendrochronology – Marta Dominguez Delmás & Susan Ras, and RCE
Demonstration of this dating method and determination of whether wood samples are suitable for it.
Interested? You're welcome! To ensure you have a spot, please contact the coordinator Alie van Veenendaal
Ground floor lounge
(continuing until 8:30 PM)
Archeobotany – Axle
Archaeobotany, palynology, endoparasitology and wood anatomy.
Wooden room
(continuing until 8:30 PM)
Wood – Silke Lange & Tamara Vernimmen
At Museum Hoge Woerd, you'll find a true treasure trove: a museum hall entirely dedicated to special wooden objects and wood research. Especially for the ArcheoScienceFest, Silke Lange of Archeohout and Tamara Vernimmen of Arduinna Botanisch Consult will be here to immerse you in their knowledge of wood. Seize your chance!
