Data Collaborations: DIGILAB and FAIR

DANS-KNAW & DIVERSE PARTNERS

There is a wide variety of data across the various disciplines of heritage science, ranging from descriptive art historical information to analytical ‘big data’. This data is produced by museums and heritage institutions, as well as by universities, archives and scientific research facilities. It is quite a challenge to develop a suitable digital environment that allows users to store and exchange this highly diverse data. Most E-RIHS.nl partners have their own infrastructures for sharing their collection and research data, but many of these are not accessible to other organisations. Other E-RIHS.nl partners (and aspiring partners) are still in the process of building their own infrastructures, some of which are shared. There is a strong need for data management knowledge and training in these organisations.

DIGILAB

Creating an infrastructure for the sharing of data, data sets and data tools with other E-RIHS partners and the world beyond is fundamental to achieving E-RIHS’s ambitions. To achieve this, the European E-RIHS network is hard at work on the development of DIGILAB, a virtual platform for data collaboration. The investments in the Dutch E-RIHS infrastructure are an important contribution to this DIGILAB for heritage sciences. Moreover, this development provides a solid foundation for the so-called ‘FAIRification’ of Dutch data. A common, standardised and easily accessible network of data collections will make data Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable.

Towards FAIR data

The DANS project has three components:
— Inventory of E-RIHS.nl partners’ current data infrastructures and data types.
— Needs analysis: what are the requirements with regard to finding, sharing, archiving and reusing data?
The results of the inventory and needs analysis were compiled in a final report published in October 2022.

— Training sessions for E-RIHS.nl partners on research data management, organised with partners from Research Data Netherlands (RDNL), the Digital Heritage Network (NDE) and Sound & Vision, supported by VHIC (Van Heijst Information Consulting). These training sessions took place in June 2022 and March 2023.
