RKD – NEDERLANDS INSTITUUT VOOR KUNSTGESCHIEDENIS & DIVERSE PARTNERS

RKD – Netherlands Institute for Art History is contributing to the objectives of E-RIHS by developing a platform that connects multiple knowledge sources and systems. Institutes without their own infrastructure will be able to use this platform to store and make available their natural science research data. The platform will allow research data from different institutions to be searched, linked, presented and made available for follow-up research from a single location. It will also make it possible to perform integrated research, find new cross-links and build on previous research findings. By combining and systematically unlocking data, the platform will encourage the formulation of topical research questions, while also making it easier to identify connections and draw new scientific conclusions.

Reference Lab – De Stijl

The pilot project Reference Lab – De Stijl focuses on the multiple and dispersed sources of knowledge surrounding De Stijl in the collections of the RCE and the RKD. Both institutions have a large, diverse collection of research data in the field of The style, with art historical information, research and advisory reports and technical documentation (infrared images, X-rays, etc.). There is a crossover between visual works of art – by, for example, Mondriaan, Van Doesburg, Van der Leck – and the built heritage of, among others, Rietveld, Van Eesteren and again Van Doesburg. The pilot will be completed in 2023.
The Reference lab is the test case for the further development of the public interface RKDtechnical into an online platform for connecting multiple and distributed knowledge sources and data systems with natural science research data from home and abroad via Linked Open Data (LOD).

Linked Open Data

To develop the platform, the RKD is building on a solid foundation. The online infrastructure provides access to our own collections via RKDresearch and more specifically to natural science research data via the RKDtechnical database. The results from the pilot will be used to further develop RKDtechnical into an online platform where museums and heritage institutions at home and abroad can make their data sustainably accessible and accessible.
